An Apple a Day…really COULD keep the doctor away

I think we have all heard the old Welsh proverb “An apple a day keeps the doctor away”, but do you know why apples are so popular?

Apple trees are one of the most widely grown fruit trees in the world. It’s no wonder that this crisp fruit is such a staple in households everywhere! It comes as no surprise that so many cultures incorporate apples into their diet since there are so many healthy benefits to be had.

America’s favorite fruit

America’s favorite fruit is not only lovely in a pie, but amazing baked with oatmeal on top as an apple crisp or popped into the oven on its own – with a little honey drizzle it turns into a delightful, warm treat.

They can be eaten and prepared in so many ways – it really is a versatile food.

Often eat apple slices with some peanut butter, and on special occasions i get fancy and take it up a notch by sprinkling some toasted coconut over the pieces! So simple but sooo good.

Apples are perfect plucked straight from the branches or added to a salad for some natural sweetness and crunch.

If you happen to have a dehydrator on hand you can easily make homemade apple rings too.  A perfect, low calorie and sugar snack for the kids since the drying process will enhance their sweetness and no added sweeteners are necessary.  Trust me, these easy and healthy snacks won’t last long — they’re delicious and nutritious!

Oh so many benefits

High in vitamin C, fiber and antioxidants, a significant part of an apple’s nutrients is found in its skin, so you can’t go wrong by going the easy route and eating them whole. They are high in water content too, which makes them filling so they’re a perfect snack to hold your over while you wait for dinner.

The fibre in an apple also slows down the digestion and absorption of carbs, which means they won’t spike your blood sugar levels.  In fact, fiber is known to aid in the prevention of type 3 diabetes and can improve blood sugar control. The soluble fiber in apples is pectin which also helps reduce cholesterol levels.

Nutrition Hack! – Applesauce makes a fantastic stand-in for vegetable oil to make guilt-free baked goods. Applesauce adds not only moisture and flavor to treats, but also fiber and nutrients. Bonus!

Apples are also an excellent source of antioxidants, which combat free radicals.  Free radicals are harmful substances produced in the body that are a known cause of aging and some diseases, including asthma, diabetes and degenerative eye disease.  This miracle fruit can even help improve your memory as they contain high levels of boron which increase mental awareness and stimulates electrical activity in the brain.  Our bodies don’t produce boron so a great way to get some is by eating apples.

Of course the reason that I personally love apples is that they are a delicious start to any juice!

My Pure-Goblin juice (on sale for $8.00 through November!) is bold, mouthwatering and a perfect way to get your hit of apple on the go!  Pure-Goblin also contains apple cider vinegar, cabbage, celery, cucumber, kale and lemon— which makes it lower in sugar than other juices and an excellent choice for veggie lovers as well.
