What is Aerobic Exercise?

Dictionary.com defines aerobics as various sustained exercises; as jogging, rowing, swimming, or cycling, that stimulate and strengthen the heart and lungs, thereby improving the body’s utilization of oxygen. http://www.dictionary.com/browse/aerobic-exercises. Each of these exercises increases your heart rate and also stimulates blood flow throughout the body.

Benefits of Aerobic Exercise

  1. Aerobic exercise burns calories. Calories in vs. calories out determines weight loss or weight gain. Exercise burns calories and when combined with a healthy diet can result in a calorie deficit resulting in weight loss.
  2. Lower your Blood Pressure with aerobic exercise. Your heart strengthens with consistent exercise.  As your heart gets stronger it doesn’t have to work as hard to pump blood through your body. As a result, the less the heart has to work to pump blood the lower your blood pressure will be.
  3. Aerobic exercise improves your Cholesterol. Both HDL and LDL are improved with consistent aerobic exercise. Reduction of LDL can also have a greater impact when combined with a healthy diet.
  4. Boosting your Mood is another benefit of exercise. Exercise reduces cortisol levels which are often increased with stress and anxiety.
  5. Exercise increases energy levels. Gets your endorphins going and gains increased energy with exercise. It’s been said that exercise can give you more energy than caffeine.
  6. Improve sleep quality with exercise. Exercise may improve sleep quality.  The energy used while exercising may also increase the hours spent sleeping.

Recommendations for Exercise

30-minutes of exercise 5 days per week is generally recommended. If you are just starting out with exercising I recommend starting off with 3 days per week. Work your way up to the 5 days. Breaking your exercise into two 15-minute segments is also an option.

The best exercise to do is one that you enjoy and will remain consistent with. Add exercise to your daily schedule to ensure you get your 30-minutes in each day. Plan your schedule and start exercising today.

What will you do to start your exercising regimen so that you can improve both your heart and overall health?
